Creating value from the market for Ex-certified robots
Our deep understanding of Ex-certified robots underpins everything we do — so that our robots operate on major industrial facilities around the world.
A culture of trust, teamwork, no harm and common sense
Founded
ExRobotics was founded by a team that spent seven years on Shell's Sensabot project — the Sensabot Mark 2 was the first robot in the world to be IECEx certified for potentially explosive gas locations.
ExR-1 commercialised
A remotely controlled robot, IECEx and ATEX certified for Zone 1 locations.
ExR-2 platform
When it became clear the market needed fully autonomous robots, we developed ExR-2 — the very successful platform that underpins all subsequent developments.
ExR-2.5 deployed worldwide
Forty ExR-2.5 robots deployed for customers including Shell, Saudi Aramco, Equinor and Repsol.
Business context
- Industrial companies are continually striving to cut costs and improve safety.
- Experienced personnel are retiring — the big shift change in oil and gas.
- Younger employees are less inclined to work in remote, arduous environments and are drawn to high-tech roles.
- Robots and the cloud are coming of age.
Business strategy
- Develop the market for industrial robots in unstructured, harsh, remote, hazardous locations.
- Focus on potentially explosive gas and dust applications, where commercial robot suppliers are few.
- Offer a complete supply-chain package — from development and assembly through supply, operation, maintenance and decommissioning.

Built and tested in Delft
Technology
ExRobotics is an integrator. We source parts and expertise externally where they exist and combine them into robot platforms, designing Ex enclosures where needed — and building our own parts when none exist.
Assembly
Based in Delft, The Netherlands. Each of our five work stations can assemble at least 30 robots per year.
Testing
Every robot gets a functional test before despatch. New developments are tested rigorously at the nearby RDM campus, then field-tested at the facilities of willing customers.
